Hair Removal FAQs

What kind of machine do you use?

We use the SpectraQuattro, which is an advanced pulsed light system. It is the only one of its kind to utilize both light and heat energy (LHE) to destroy unwanted hair. Where most laser devices utilize only heat energy, the SpectraQuattro safely and effectively utilizes both light and heat energy for effective hair removal.

Is the SpectraQuattro a laser?

No. The SpectraQuattro is not a laser, but it does use light to achieve permanent hair reduction. Unlike a laser, SpectraQuattro uses a broad spectrum of light. It generates a pulse of intense concentrated light directly to the hair follicle without transferring excessive heat to the surrounding skin. Laser light scatters energy to surrounding skin and causes potential irritation or burns to the skin.

Why is the SpectraQuattro superior to other IPL machines?

For maximum power and efficiency, SpectraQuattro utilizes a square beam profile with a full spectrum wavelength light flash. SpectraQuattro’s blue sapphire crystal lenses capture scattered light, returning and refocusing it for each energy pulse. This phenomenon of light energy recycling provides a reduction of wasted light. Multi-pulsation control, chromophore efficiency and super-selective photothermolysis allow us to adjust the system to meet the specific needs of our clients and maximize effectiveness. This unique capability makes SpectraQuattro superior to fixed IPL systems.

How does it work?

There are three phases to the hair growth cycle. Hair can only be removed during one of these phases-known as the Anagen phase. When the hair is treated during this phase the melanin in the hair works as a chromophore attracting the light to the depth and area of needed treatment. The light energy then creates a thermal or heat energy that coagulates the bulb and bulge of the hair. LHE technology directly transmits the amount of (light and heat) energy required to kill the hair follicle.

What is involved in the procedure?

A gentle flash of intense light is quickly pulsed over the treatment area every three seconds until the area has received an adequate “dose” of light energy.

How many treatments will I need?

Most clients require between six and eight treatments depending on the treatment area growth patterns to achieve nearly complete, permanent hair reduction. Hair destruction and removal is only effective on hair that is in the Anagen (i.e. active) growth phase. At any given point in time, only approximately 20-30% of hair in any treatment area is in the Anagen phase. The first treatment typically removes all hair in the Anagen phase (generally 20-30%). The second treatment again removes an additional 20-30% of the hair in the Anagen phase, and so on. After 6-8 properly timed treatments, the majority of clients achieve more than 90% permanent hair reduction in the treated area.

Is it uncomfortable?

Most of our clients find the process surprisingly comfortable. The SpectraQuattro’s chilled sapphire tip provides skin cooling to keep the skin cool during the treatment. We also use a cold compress after each session to help soothe the skin. Permanent hair reduction treatments are so quick and easy, the comfort factor is generally not an issue.

What do I need to do prior to a treatment?

• Do not tweeze, wax or use any depilatory agent (hair removal cream) for one month. You can shave as much as you would like. (If you pull out the hair it will not be in the active growth phase)
• Treatments are most effective on recently shaved areas. Shave the day of your appointment or within 24 hours before.
• Treatments cannot be performed on areas with a sunburn. Avoid direct exposure to the sun, tanning beds or self-tanning products. For best results, wait at least 30 days after a sunburn or tanning or at least 1 1/2 weeks after using self-tanning lotion. (If you need to be in the sun, use at least a 30 SPF sunscreen).

Can anyone have permanent hair removal?

You are NOT a good candidate for hair removal if you:
• Have used accutane within 6 months prior to treatment
• Have only blonde or grey hair, electrolysis treatments will achieve the results you require. Ask us for more details.
• Have skin cancer
• Are pregnant
