Chiropractic Frequently Asked Questions

How does chiropractic care work?
Your body is designed to heal itself, to regulate growth, functions and ability. The nervous system runs from your brain, along the coarse of your spine and throughout your entire body. Image your brain as the command post, that sends and receives thousands of messages each day to the surrounding areas of your body through your nerves. When your spine is out of alignment, these delicate nerves can be cut off. Damage caused from misalignment in your spine can range from minor to quite extensive, effecting your mobility, muscle balance and your ability to heal itself.

Chiropractic care works to recreate postural balance and structure alignment. Just like your teeth, your spine needs consistent care in maintaining its optimal health. When left untreated over time, problems in your spine, will cause long term damage like pain, stiffness and sometimes more serious problems. Your chiropractor will customize your treatment just to you! The integrity of your nervous system will improve, and your pain can be diminished.

Is chiropractic effective?
Yes, chiropractic care is effective, and it is safe. With a vast amount of medical research conducted and millions of healthy patients, we know that chiropractic care is safe and effective. Over twenty years of controlled, independent studies have proven healing and improvement for patients with lower back pain, neck pain and other challenges related to their spine. Individual testing and evaluation can determine how effective chiropractic care will be in healing your specific spine issues. Call today to make an appointment! (801748-0140.

What is Subluxation?
The term subluxation comes from the Latin word “sub,” meaning somewhat or slightly and “luxate” meaning to dislocated.  Subluxation is when one or more of your vertebrae move out of position. This creates pressure and irritation on the spinal nerves, blood vessels and the surrounding muscles. Because the spinal cord controls and coordinates all of the body’s functions, if you interfere with the signals your body will not be able to work at 100% capacity.
There are a variety of ways that a person can experience a subluxation, it may be a traumatic event such as a car accident, or a fall. It could also be caused from a series of day to day activities such as poor working posture, or a misstepped lifting position.

A Chiropractor’s job is to identify the subluxations, and with a variety of techniques, use his hands to make adjustments to the alignment of the vertebrae. Once alignment has been restored, the spinal chord is then free to work properly.

What is a chiropractic adjustment? Is it safe?
The basics of Chiropractic care come from receiving an adjustment, or a manipulation. In order to reduce the subluxation of the vertebrae, Dr. Gray will manipulate the individual vertebra back into its natural alignment. The end result often includes increased motion, minimizing nerve irritation and improved function.

Dr. Gray applies a swift movement, short lever arm thrust to the vertebra. Often times you’ll actually hear a popping sound, which is totally normal and healthy. The body releases gas, including oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, this is called cavitation. He releases the pressure and most patients comment on the relief that comes. Periodically patients experience mild discomfort, usually caused from muscle tensing during the adjustment, or spasms in the muscles.

Sometimes a audible sound is not heard. Caused typically by significant muscle splinting or inadequate relaxation by the patient. If this occurs, ice, rest and electrical stimulation, as well as massage before adjustments are made will help expedite the healing process.

What can I expect from my visit to a chiropractor?
1. We have you fill out a medical questionnaire and new patient paperwork.

2. You’ll find with your initial consultation with Dr. Gray that he doesn't just focus on fixing your symptoms, he truly wants to heal the origin of your pain, in order to create lasting change and healing.  During this consultation, you can ask questions, share your concerns and expectations.

3. Dr. Gray will also walk you through his role as a health provider. After a physical exam, which may include orthopedic testing, reflex assessments, muscle testing, and a specific Chiropractic evaluation, Dr. Gray will share a prognosis. In some cases x-rays may be necessary to determine an exact diagnosis. X-rays are done right in our office. Dr. Gray will go over the results of the exam and x-rays with you.

4. Then, depending on your situation, Dr. Gray may give you an adjustment and/or begin physical therapy, if needed. Adjustments shouldn't be painful, although you may feel some discomfort until the pressure in the joint is relieved.

5. Depending on your condition, Dr. Gray may schedule a series of visits for care.

What results can I expect from treatment?
Depending on a variety of conditions, Dr. Gray can give you an accurate picture of what you will experience because of chiropractic care. Often times age, health, and the severity and longevity of spine trauma can effect the end results from chiropractic treatment. However, one of the primary reasons a person sees a Chiropractor is the quick results! A study recently published by the Worker’s Compensation Board shows that people who seek chiropractic care return faster to work when having experienced lower back pain. What results can you expect? Great ones!

How long do Doctors of Chiropractic go to school?
Schooling requirements of Chiropractors mirror the length and training of most medical or dental students. After completing undergraduate work, they can apply for a chiropractic program, that requires a minimum of 4,500 hours of study. Their time spent over four years includes class study, internships, clinical science and more! You can guarantee that all chiropractors have studied basic sciences, including anatomy physiology, pathology, biochemistry, and clinical sciences. They receive training in chiropractic philosophy and the practice thereof. Finally, after years of training and study, they receive a clinical internship with hours of hands on practice.
